That’s how it is. Some loves can’t be caged, like Irakli and Keti’s. Some captivities don’t need bars, like those of Irakli’s captors.”

…so that Russia governs you? What do you feed your children with? With what are you raising them like this? I truly want to know: what do you say to those who are no longer with us? To those about whom we always say — we must do everything so that their memory stays alive with us?

If we forget the past, we will return to that past again. If we reflect on nothing, you will come, you will go, and then you will arrest me, my friends. You will insult us on the way and then act surprised — why do they call us slaves? That is why we call you that, friends, because we cannot see that you are Georgians. We cannot see that you even begin to grasp what horror you are committing.

Individually, you tell us that you understand, that you know it’s wrong — and that is the worst of all. It is terrible when young people are beaten. It is terrible when they are unjustly thrown into prison. It is terrible when you are made into false witnesses.

But what do you do now? What do you always do? What do you do every single day? Nothing is left?

You tell us that we have lost our Georgianness, that we are losing our identity, our culture. And yet you fall silent when what is most important to you, what should be most sacred — dignity, memory of the past, the memory of your fellow citizens — is being so deeply insulted.

In response to the question, “Is Antsukhelidze immortal?” [she replied,] “We are all mortal.”

Citizens gathered in protest in front of Tea Tsulukiani’s house following her controversial statement made during a parliamentary investigative commission. Tsulukiani referred to Georgia’s national hero, Giorgi Antsukhelidze—who was tortured to death—as someone “senselessly sacrificed for someone’s PR.”
