Judge Zviad Tsekvava fined “Publika” journalist Mariam Kavshbaia 5,000 GEL.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs accused her of blocking the road on February 3.
At the time (before and after as well), the journalist was carrying out her professional duties, covering the ongoing protest on Rustaveli Avenue.

Mariam Kavshbaia presented evidence to the court — photographs she had taken on that day, published on “Publika’s” Facebook page under her name. Even in the video footage submitted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, she is clearly seen working as a journalist during the protest.

Nevertheless, the court fined Mariam — who is also a student — 5,000 GEL.

The words “Down with the Russian Empire” are being considered as grounds for insulting Tatia, and for this reason, imprisonment is being sought. The trial has been postponed to the 30th.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs is accusing Tatia Afriamashvili of insulting politician Mariam Lashkhi. The case is being reviewed by Judge Manuchar Tsatsua, who postponed the verdict announcement to May 30.

According to lawyer Fiqria Makharadze, the administrative offense report lists the following phrases as potential violations: “No to Russian slavery” and “Down with Russia’s servants.”

Mariam Lashkhi filed a complaint against Tatia Afriamashvili and Magda Mamukashvili over an incident that took place on May 17. Activists approached a café where Lashkhi was present with companions, including children, and chanted slogans such as: “Freedom to political prisoners, no to the Russian regime, no to Russia’s servants… down with Russia’s servants.”

A recent amendment made in February to the Code of Administrative Offenses criminalizes insulting high-ranking state or political officials. Penalties range from a fine of 1,500 to 4,000 GEL or up to 45 days of administrative detention.

Magda Mamukashvili’s trial is scheduled for May 27.
