A single mother separated from a group of brutally beaten protesters and broke through a police cordon built of shields… Before going out to the protest, the woman wrote on her arm that she had allergies and asked doctors not to administer certain medications if she were found unconscious… The World Press Photo winning image shows a woman standing in front of riot police with her arms outstretched, demanding to be detained because her friend had already been arrested. In the isolator, she was humiliated and filmed. But who could have imagined that, a year after, people would be publishing photos of burns caused by water cannons, explaining them by the possible addition of chemical substances. Agents banned since the World War One.
On November 28, 2025, the continuous political protest in Georgia surpassed the 365-day mark, and still nothing is certain. However, it can definitely be said that it has become part of the world’s newest history and that this chapter bears a woman’s face.
Over the course of a year, this archival installation chronologically organizes materials circulated through media sources and the personal pages of those directly involved, inviting the viewer to examine the essence of the protest and the process through which its female face was formed.
The name Maro is referenced in honor of Maro Makashvili, a 19-year-old nurse who was killed on the front line in 1921 during the Red Army invasion, which led to the subsequent occupation of the Georgian Republic for nearly seventy years. Decades later, in 2015, Maro Makashvili was posthumously recognized as the first female National Hero of independent Georgia, becoming a symbol of political resistance and historical memory.
Hope, the English translations of the interviews and personal notes archived in Daughters of Maro will help international researchers and contribute to a coherent understanding of the events.
მარტოხელა დედა სასტიკად ნაცემი დემონსტრანტების ჯგუფს გამოეყო და ფარებით აწყობილი პოლიციის კორდონი ფეხით შეანგრია… აქციაზე გასვლის წინ, ქალმა ხელზე წარწერა გაიკეთა, რომ ის ალერგიულია და რომ უგონოდ პოვნის შემთხვევაში, ექიმებს გარკვეული წამლები არ გამოეყენებინათ. ვორლდ პრესს ფოტოს გამარჯვებული – ქალის სურათია, რომელიც სპეც-რაზმის წინ გაშლილი ხელებით დადგა და მის წაყვანას ითხოვდა, რადგან მისი მეგობარიც დაჭერილი იყო. იზოლატორში მას ამცირებდნენ და ვიდეოებს უღებდნენ. მაგრამ ვინ წარმოიდგენდა, რომ პროტესტის ერთი წლის თავზე, ადამიანები წყლის ჭავლისგან მიღებული დამწვრობების ფოტოებს გამოაქვეყნებდნენ და ამას წყალში შესაძლოდ გარეული ქიმიკატებით ახსნიდნენ, რომელიც პირველი მსოფლიო ომის შემდეგ აიკრძალა.
2025 წლის 28 ნოემბერს, საქართველოში უწყვეტმა პოლიტიკურმა პროტესტმა 365 დღიან ნიშნულს გადააჭარბა და ჯერ კიდევ არაფერია გარკვეული. თუმცა ნამდვილად შეიძლება ითქვას, რომ ეს ამბავი უკვე მსოფლიოს უახლესი ისტორიის ნაწილია და რომ მას ქალის სახე აქვს.
ერთი წლის განმავლობაში, მედია წყაროებით და უშუალოდ მონაწილე ადამიანების გვერდებით გავრცელებული მასალების ქრონოლოგიური სისტემატიზაციით, ეს საარქივო ინსტალაცია დამთვალიერებელს პროტესტის არსის და მისი ქალური სახის შექმნის პროცესის გააზრებას სთავაზობს.
სახელი მარო, 1921 წელს წითელი არმიის შემოჭრის დროს, ფრონტის ხაზზე დაღუპული 19 წლის მედდას – მარო მაყაშვილს ეკუთვნის. ბრძოლაში დამარცხებამ, საქართველოს თითქმის სამოცდაათ წლიანი ოკუპაცია გამოიწვია და მხოლოდ ათწლეულების შემდეგ, 2015 წელს, მარო მაყაშვილს პირველი ქალი ეროვნული გმირის წოდება მიენიჭა. ხოლო მისი სახელი, პოლიტიკური წინააღმდეგობის და ისტორიული მეხსიერების ერთერთ სიმბოლოდ იქცა.
